Melodic Dictation: Wellerman
This resource may be used with the resource available HERE:
Are your music students going crazy for the TikTok trend of sea chanties? Hearing strains of Wellerman coming from your classroom? This melodic dictation Google SLIDE deck is just what your Middle or High School Band, Choir, or Orchestra students have been waiting for! These melodic dictation exercises are a great addition to your existing sightreading or music theory curriculum.
This resource includes 2 Google SLIDE decks: the Student Version, and the Teacher's Guide. The student version includes 4 popular Sea Shanties written as melodic dictation exercises. Each exercise will have 12-18 "Fill-in-the Blank" notes that they need to identify. Students may listen to the provided Youtube video, and record their answers in the applicable text boxes. Answers may be provided as note notes or solfege based on your specifications.
The "Fill-in-the Blank" notes and text boxes are editable so that you may customize each exercise for your particular students. However, the Google SLIDE deck is ready-to-use.
The Teacher's Guide comes with the slides listed above. You may choose to complete them as a class, small group work, as an asynchronous class activity, or homework. In addition, it contains slides with the Answer Key videos as well as the Sheet Music. Depending on your students and your goals, you may choose to include these in the student version as well in order to facilitate self-correction and reflection.
You may decide to provide hints to your students… starting notes/solfege, key signature, etc. These are not provided in the students slides to allow for flexibility…. Movable Do versus Fixed Do, La or Do-Based Minor, etc.
